Annealing and hardening furnaces up to 1300 °C – for the heat treatment of steel

The ASM series annealing and hardening furnaces are suitable for annealing and heating steel prior to hardening in an air atmosphere at temperatures up to 1300 °C. A robust steel and stainless steel construction, a durable furnace structure and protected heating elements support their use in industrial heat treatment.

Heating is provided from both sides and the base. The multilayer insulation reduces heat loss, while the ventilated casing helps lower the external surface temperature and protects against corrosion. The furnace is loaded through a manually operated hinged door that opens downwards or upwards; a hydraulic lifting door is available as an option. Different furnace sizes and door configurations allow the equipment to be tailored to your workpiece dimensions, batch handling requirements and operating processes.

Technical features of the ASM series

  • Maximum temperature: 1300 °C
  • Heating: freely radiating Kanthal heating coils on support tubes on both sides and in the base
  • Casing: robust steel and stainless steel construction with ventilation behind the panels to protect against corrosion
  • Thermal insulation: multilayer insulation
  • Furnace chamber: insulating firebrick lining, with wear-resistant bricks in the door frame
  • Base: SiC plate to protect the base heating elements
  • Door seal: flexible seal to protect the refractory lining
  • Casing cover: perforated sheet metal to prevent heat and moisture build-up
  • Safety: positive-opening door safety switch and a heat shield for protection against radiant heat
  • Solid-state relays: silent, low-wear switching of the heating elements without mechanical switching contacts; supplied as standard

Applications for annealing and hardening furnaces

The ASM series is used for the heat treatment of steel. Typical users include metalworking companies, toolmaking businesses, and testing and development facilities.

Depending on the material, the required temperature and the selected furnace configuration, typical applications include:

  • Heating steel components prior to quenching during hardening
  • Annealing workpieces and tools
  • Stress-relief annealing to reduce internal stresses
  • Soft annealing to prepare for subsequent machining operations
  • Heat treatment trials with different temperature profiles

Material and atmosphere considerations

The appropriate temperature profile depends on the material and the intended treatment result. In addition to the heating and holding times, subsequent cooling or quenching is also critical.

Heat treatment in an air atmosphere can cause oxidation and scaling. If specific surface requirements apply, suitable protection through the use of a protective gas should be considered.

Protective gas operation requires suitable equipment. We work with you to define the appropriate configuration and process conditions.

What is an annealing and hardening furnace?

An annealing and hardening furnace is an electrically heated chamber furnace for the heat treatment of metal workpieces. It brings the batch to a specified temperature and maintains it according to the requirements of the particular process.

During annealing, material properties are modified through a controlled heating and cooling profile. When hardening steel, the furnace heats the workpieces to the required hardening temperature. Subsequent quenching takes place in suitable equipment outside the furnace.

Choosing the right annealing and hardening furnace

The material type, required operating temperature, and batch dimensions and weight are key factors when selecting a furnace. The chamber must provide sufficient space for the workpieces and their safe handling. Heating time, holding time and the required cycle time should also be taken into account when specifying the equipment.

The ASM series combines a robust construction with heating from three sides and multilayer insulation. Schröder Industrieöfen helps you select the appropriate furnace size and equipment for your heat treatment process.
